| Clockwork 3 |
Clockwork three is the successor to the original Clockwork design and the one I could build copies of. It's made from cherry, rather than walnut, and has a bolt on neck. The bolt on neck allows the cone to sit deeper in the body so the central hole doesn't have to be cut back so far for the cone which makes the whole top stiffer and require less bracing than Clockwork allowing for a more minimalistic design. It still has the same perimeter bolts that hold a hollowed out, rounded edged top to the body. The back is built similarly but it's glued to the cherry rim. The internal structure is machined from birch plywood to form a stable sound well. It has a felt gasket between the top and the body that seals the two together and conceals any misalignment.
The biscuit bridge is cocobolo with an ebony saddle. The front nut is likewise ebony and serves only as a divider for the strings as the zero fret provides the bearing surface. The loop end strings are hung off brass screws set into a wenge block which is then screwed to a cherry block that's glued to the rim assembly in turn.
The specs are my standard 26 5/8" scale, 1 1/8" wide neck, 15/16" thick tapering to 7/8" at the nut, Grover uke tuners, tuned Dad, strung .022w, .015, .012. It's got that plonky resonator tone that I'm after which can be heard:
